Books and Materials

Parents are asked to purchase the books the student(s) will be using for lessons.  I receive a discount on the materials and pass that on to the parents.  There are other supplementary books available to borrow from my lending library for all levels to enrich the student's learning experience, build confidence, improve technique, and make learning more fun which I will recommend but you are not required to purchase them.

We also have a FREE box filled with music that you are welcome to look through.

Practicing

I provide each student with an assignment sheet at each lesson.  The sheet contains a list of songs, exercises, scales, and anything else covered during the lesson with specific goals for the student to accomplish during the week at home.

I recommend a minimum of 15 - 30 minutes each day of practice, depending on the level.  Students are also taught that practicing is so much more than just running through the song a couple of times.  I highly recommend the 'breaking down' of music; i.e. practicing the first 3 measures of a piece until the student is comfortable with the technique and fingering before moving on.  The students that 'break down' the music will almost always progress much quicker than those that try to just play the song.

Supervision/sit-ins during lessons

Unlike some private music instructors, I actually prefer a parent staying for the lesson.  This gives the parent the opportunity to clearly see how their child is progressing and where they may need improvement.  I do ask that if a parent stays that he/she respect the time we have for a lesson though.  I'm more than happy to talk and answer any questions or concerns after the lesson is over.  If we cannot talk after the lesson, you're welcome to call or email me as well.

Termination

Teaching is such a rewarding career and something that I truly have passion for.  Unfortunately (and rarely) I will have to dismiss a student if any of the following occurs on a regular basis:

  • Uncooperative attitude
  • Disrespect in any form
  • Lack of progress due to insufficient practice and/or failure to complete theory assignments
  • Poor attendance

I do my best to work with the parent and student to fix the situation before dismissal.  I firmly believe that lessons are not beneficial to any party if any of the above occurs regularly.
